Employment Opportunity: Cultural Retail Associate - Summer Student  
Location: Halifax, NS 
Salary Range: $19.00/ per hour    
Employment Term: 8 weeks, July 2026- August 2026 (35 hours per week, hours will vary including evenings and weekends) 
Reports To: Programs Manager 
 
General Description: 
One of the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre’s Tourism Development initiatives, Sitamuk Cultural Post, located on the Kjipuktuk/Halifax waterfront is looking for Two (2) Cultural Retail Associate - Summer Student(s). The objective of the Cultural Post is to promote and sell authentic Mi’kmaq and Indigenous crafts, souvenirs, and experiences while creating a hub to showcase the rich culture and history of our Mi’kmaq & Indigenous peoples. This position will be focused on providing an Indigenous student the opportunity to gain work experience while continuing their education. Applicants must be willing to work with a rostered schedule including evenings and weekends. This position is designated for students with Indigenous ancestry. Applicants must also be able to provide proof of post-secondary enrolment. 
 
Key Responsibilities: 
 
  • Promoting the cultural post as a project of the MNFC and its programs in a professional manner 
  • Enhancing visitor experience by creating a welcoming environment and sharing comprehensive knowledge of products and offerings as needed 
  • Understanding how to operate Point of Sale (POS) system to process transactions of product and services provided at the Cultural Post, and in connection to Cultural Tourism offerings 
  • Uphold accurate inventory processes, reconcile stock 
  • Ensure all opening and closing duties and completed such as: 
  • Securing helping the float and facility is secure.  
  • Actively maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming presentation of the interior and exterior of the cultural post. Assist with pricing and product displays 
  • Assist with marketing and promotion of:  
  • In store marketing and promotion  
  • Offsite marketing and vending events  
  • Development of promotional media and design  
  • Development and maintenance of social media marketing and promotion.  
  • Customer and market research  
  • May perform other related duties as required 
 

Qualifications & Experience; 

  • Must be between 18 and 30 years of age at the start of employment (designated youth position) 
  • Must have attended post-secondary from September 2025 to April 2026; and be returning to full-time studies in the Fall of 2026  
  • Experience working in customer service 
  • Foundational knowledge of Mi’kmaw and Indigenous culture with strong willingness to learn 
  • Dependable and consistently works to uphold MNFC ethics and standards 
  • This position is designated for people with Indigenous ancestry, please self identify
